2000 GUINEAS 1812

The 4th winner of the 2000 Guineas, held on Tuesday 14th April 1812 over the Rowley Mile course, was Cwrw (7/1), a brown colt by Dick Andrews out of Lady Charlotte (a sister to Kite), owned by the 3rd Earl of Darlington. A field of 7 runners contested the race which was won by a neck and was worth 1450 Guineas (Equivalent to £113,000 in 2017)

Controversy surrounded this race because Lord Darlington had declared a second, unnamed colt by Remembrancer, to run in the race. This was heavily backed in early betting, not least because Sam Chifney jnr was aboard the colt as it was taken to the start. Furthermore, significant money was seen for the colt, causing the price of all other horses to extend. At the start Chifney dismounted from the unnamed colt and mounted Cwrw which he duly won on, albeit by only a neck. However, unlike today when Rule 4 operates, in 1812 money from the unnamed colt was returned and the winner was paid out at the larger odds.
